Description
The Louisiana State Museum (LSM) is poised for growth in the post-Katrina period and is seeking an experienced, detail-oriented Collection Manager. The incumbent will be based in New Orleans and will be responsible for the LSM's TMS collection management database and guarantee that the integrity of the data is maintained. The incumbent will report to the Collections Division Director.

Duties include:
Maintaining and upgrading of the TMS database. Creating protocols for database management and providing documentation for implementing protocols. Training/ supervising staff on use of database as necessary. Ensuring the use of standardized terminology, classification hierarchies, subject headings, and other authorities in the database. When standard thesauri do not contain terms needed for the database, seeing that appropriate local terms are created following the protocols and hierarchical structures employed in the standard thesauri. Exercising responsibility to make changes to all authorities. Providing final review of all records for clarity, consistency, and typographical accuracy. Determining rules for providing permission for other staff to add, edit, or delete data. Producing computer reports from database as needed by the division or by senior management.

Starting salaries will be in the range of $35,000 - $45,000 depending on qualifications. The State of Louisiana offers a comprehensive benefits package.

Requirements
Minimum requirements include: A BA in Art History, American History, American Studies, Museology, Anthropology, Archaeology, Geology, Cultural Geography, History, or Historical Geography plus three years of professional-level experience. Additional preferred requirements include: excellent writing, oral communication, interpersonal, and management skills; five years experience as a registrar or in collection management; advanced skills in database management particularly involving TMS; expertise in using standardized terminology, classification hierarchies, subject headings, and other authorities.

LSM is a state agency founded in 1906. Headquartered in New Orleans, it encompasses a network of thirteen facilities located across Louisiana. The LSM's French Quarter facilities include six National Historic Landmarks: the Cabildo (1795 - 1799), the Presbytere (1791 - 1813), the Old U.S. Mint (1835), the Arsenal (1839), Madam John's Legacy (1789), and the 1850 House. The LSM operates additional museums in Patterson, Thibodaux, Natchitoches, and Baton Rouge.
