Description
The Louisiana State Museum (LSM) is poised for growth in the post-Katrina period and is seeking a Curator for the E.D. White Historic Site in Thibodaux. The incumbent will be primarily responsible for developing and conducting educational and public programs at working with area schools to develop tours. Additionally, she/he will maintain the permanent exhibitions and a small collection at the site. The incumbent will report to the LSM's Branch Director based in Patterson.
Duties include:
Developing, coordinating, and conducting public programs at the E.D. White Historic Site. Working with other curatorial staff and historians to insure quality and accuracy. Maintaining register of, and close ties to, area artists, artisans, craftspeople, and Native American groups. Interpreting the collections, exhibitions and history of the E.D. White Historic Site through planning and development of the education program. Developing materials that compliment museum exhibitions and collections. Developing reports, articles and public presentations on the history of the site and the White family. Coordinating with the Supreme Court Historical Society and home sites of other Chief Justices to develop collaborative exhibits, programs and/or printed educational materials.
Answering inquiries from staff and public researchers. Identifying, evaluating, and recommending material for accession and or deaccession. Planning and overseeing the proper care and conservation of the collection. Maintaining collection inventory. Maintaining records of archeological materials discovered on site. Preparing documentation and site maps as necessary. Conducting gallery and site inspections and coordinating activities with other staff. Supervising interns and/or volunteers.
Starting
salaries will be in the range of $30,000 depending on qualifications.

Requirements
Minimum requirements include a BA degree in American history, American Studies, Anthropology, Archaeology, Art History, Cultural Geography, Historic Preservation, History, Historical Geography, Museum Studies, Museology, or Fine Arts plus one year of professional level museum curatorial experience. Additional preferred requirements include: excellent writing, oral communication, interpersonal, and management skills; a MA degree in American History; familiarity with 19th-century Louisiana history, plantation life, and/or U.S. Supreme Court history; proven track record of developing successful public programs; experience working with museum advisory boards and committees.
