Description
The Louisiana State Museum (LSM) is poised for growth in the post-Katrina period and is seeking an experienced, detail-oriented Registrar. The incumbent will be based in New Orleans and will supervise, organize, and maintain collection records, forms, documents, and files associated with the acquisition, accession, cataloging, packing, shipping, insurance and storage of the collections of the LSM. The incumbent will report to the Collections Division Director.

Duties include:
Processing new acquisitions including digital photography, tagging, and preparation of artifacts for storage by curators. Supervising assistant registrars, volunteers, and interns working on registration projects. Overseeing activities of photo reproductions services. Supervising collection inventories. Organizing, documenting, and coordinating all aspects of borrowing and lending objects, which includes responsibility for the handling and/or packing of objects in conjunction with curators, processing insurance claims, making shipping arrangements, coordinating security needs, handling customs procedures, processing incoming and outgoing loans, and processing requests for rights and reproductions. Working with collections curators and exhibits staff to coordinate objects retrieval, incoming and outgoing loans. Working with security staff to recommend procedures for security of storage and exhibit areas. Providing monthly and annual reports.

Starting salaries will be in the range of $35,000 - $45,000 depending on qualifications. The State of Louisiana offers a comprehensive benefits package.

Requirements
Minimum requirements include: A BA in Art History, American History, American Studies, Museology, Anthropology, Archaeology, Geology, Cultural Geography, History, or Historical Geography plus three years of professional-level experience. Additional preferred requirements include: excellent writing, oral communication, interpersonal, and management skills; five years experience as a registrar or in collection management; advanced skills in database management; familiarity with TMS; extensive experience in handing incoming and outgoing loans as well as overseeing traveling exhibitions; supervisory experience.

The LSM operates additional museums in Patterson, Thibodaux, Natchitoches, and Baton Rouge.
